PROS & CONS

cruise excursions or hiring a private company at port.

CRUISE EXCURSIONS

A cruise excursion is a tour or activity that is organized by a cruise line and offered to passengers during their cruise vacation. Excursions can be activities like sightseeing, cultural experiences, adventures, or relaxation. Excursions are typically booked through the cruise line and may include transportation, tickets, and a guide.

Pros:

  • Convenience: Cruise excursions are often organized and booked through the cruise line, so you don't have to worry about coordinating transportation or planning activities on your own.

  • Safety: Cruise lines typically vet the tour operators they work with and may offer additional insurance or protection for passengers.

  • Variety: Cruise lines often offer a wide range of excursions to choose from, so you can find something that fits your interests.

Cons:

  • Cost: Cruise excursions are typically more expensive than booking a tour independently.

  • Flexibility: You may have less flexibility to customize your itinerary or deviate from the planned route.

  • Crowds: Excursions booked through a cruise line may have more people on them, which can be less intimate or less enjoyable for some travelers.

HIRING A PRIVATE TOUR COMPANY

AT THE SHORE PORT.

Pros:

  • Customization: When you book with a private tour company, you can often tailor the itinerary to your specific interests and preferences. We use Venture Ashore to book private companies that will pick you up and drop you off at your cruise port.

  • Personal attention: Private tours may be smaller in size, allowing for a more personalized experience with your guide. You have more variety in the type of tour you want!

  • Value: In some cases, private tours can be a more cost-effective option compared to cruise excursions. We have some private tours with just the two of us that are nearly the same price as a group excursion through the cruise line.

Cons:

  • Planning: You will need to do more research and work to find a reputable tour company and plan your itinerary.

  • Safety: You’ll need to vet private tour companies and ensure that they have adequate insurance and safety measures in place in case of an emergency, accident, etc.

  • Coordination: You/the tour company will be responsible for coordinating your own transportation to and from the tour. If you don’t make it back to the ship in time, the ship will leave without you.
