MY RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR YOUR FIRST VISIT TO ICELAND
Go to the Blue Lagoon after your flight. Nothing beats getting into warm geothermal water to soak after a long flight.
Hire Midgard Base Camp for a day-tour. They offer the best experiences, and it’s the easiest way to see the stunning Þórsmörk region or other remote areas of Iceland. We’ve hired them for every visit.
Visit Skogafoss, preferably before 8am or after 6pm (depending on the time of year) to avoid crowds. Sunny mornings will reflect rainbows in front of the waterfall.
If time is short, skip the Geysers off of the Golden Circle, and go to Gullfoss instead.
Eat at Fridheimar. It’s an amazing geothermal greenhouse restaurant with the best tomato soup + bread. Make reservations in advance.
Make it stand out.
If you like animals in cool locations, you’ll have the opportunity to see an abundance of wildlife. You can spot seals lounging on the black sand beaches, and if you're lucky, you might even see whales or dolphins swimming in the ocean. Inland, visitors can also see Iceland's famous horse, the Icelandic horse, as well as sheep and reindeer grazing on the lush green pastures.
If you like homes, culture, and history, the south coast of Iceland is also home to some of the country's most charming and historic villages. You can explore charming towns like Vík and Höfn and learn about the history and culture of the region. The locals are friendly and welcoming, and many of them are more than happy to share stories and insights into their way of life.
If you like adventure, the south coast of Iceland is also a great destination for adventure enthusiasts. You can go on a guided hike on the glaciers, take a dip in a hot spring or geothermal pool, or even go on a guided snowmobiling tour. There are also plenty of opportunities for activities like rafting, kayaking, and horseback riding.
Overall, exploring the south coast of Iceland is an amazing experience that offers visitors the chance to witness an incredible landscape, wildlife, charming villages, and plenty of adventure opportunities. It's a place that will leave a lasting impression on you and provide you with memories that will last a lifetime.
